Pitcher Plant - 25 seeds
This mix of new hybrids are from the Sarracenia species. they are strikingly attractive pitcher plants which give no outward hint of their unusual dietary habits! They attract insects with their enticing scent, alluring colours and the promise of a nectar-like secretion on the lip of the 'pitcher'. A slippery footing on the bloom's rim causes unsuspecting insects to fall inside the cavity of the flower which is filled with a liquid. There is no escape; the insects die and are digested by the plant, it is thought, as a means of augmenting inadequate nitrogen levels in the soil. Height: 20-40cm (8-16").
Sow seeds on the surface of pots filled with moist sphagnum moss peat compost. Do not cover the seeds . Sit the pots in a tray of water and place this into a propagator or warm place, and keep at a temperature of around 25-27C (77-80F). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination.
